Youth and Food Futures

In summer 2015 we ran a film competition for young London film-makers on the subject of “Sustainable and Fair Food Futures”.

See below the Call for Entries and rules. The jury consisted of 4 international jury members. The winning films were:

1st Prize: “Food Waste and Food Justice” by Jasmine Adolphus-Edie, Anastasia Wambui, Kawthar Talbi, Tyrell Williams and Camila Robinson-Rodriguez

The 1st Prize was for the young film-makers to take a 1-week trip to Rio in 2016 to meet young film-makers there and to screen and discuss their film at community arts hub Observatório de Favelas.

2nd Prize and top in the Technical Category: “One day, one month one year”, by Alexis Ossio Cajias, Freddie Ngalelafu and friends

The 2nd Prize was £150 in food shopping vouchers sponsored by The Co-operative Food Store on Camberwell New Road, Kennington and five gift vouchers for cinema film club visits.


Digital film competition for Young Londoners on the topic of

“Sustainable and Fair Food Futures”

FIRST PRIZE: A 1-week trip for 3-5 young London film makers to Rio de Janeiro to meet young Brazilian film makers. 2-3 Staff members will be accompanying them.

  1. We are looking for 5-minute digital short-films on the subject of “sustainable and fair food futures”.
    What kind of social or environmental issues are connected to our everyday food?What choices are we making, as individuals, as households, as families, as institutions (such as schools) when we buy food?How might these choices affect our futures?Film-makers may choose any food-related social or environmental issue – we recommend focusing on one main issue per film.
  2. There is no particular format, everything from non-fiction (e.g. documentary style) to fiction (e.g. drama) is possible.
  3. The main language of the film should be English.
  4. Films can be filmed on any camera, including mobile phones, camcorders or other digital cameras.
  5. Films MUST NOT be longer than 5 minutes.
  6. Films must be produced by teams of 3-5 members (3 is minimum, 5 is maximum).
  7. No member of the group may have a formal degree in film making or have already made films professionally (i.e. ever been paid to do a film).
  8. Film team members have to be between 16 and 25 years old. Younger team members can be included, but in case the team wins the first prize they will only be allowed to travel to Rio if they are 16 years old by 1 December 2015.
  9. Film team members must be young Londoners, defined as “living and/or working and/or spending most of their social life in London”
  10. Criteria the prize jury will use will be:Does the film engage with an issue related to the topic: “sustainable and fair food futures”?
    Does the film explore the issue in an in-depth/”non-basic”/critical/thoughtful way?Is the film technically well-made?Is the film creative?
  11. The deadline for submitting the film is 5pm on 21 September 2015.
  12. Films should be submitted in person (e.g. on USB stick) or via online link to Naomi Shoba, Head of Youth Arts at Ovalhouse (Naomi Shoba).
