Food Futures 2.0 – Film Screening with young Brazilian film-makers from Rio
In this collaboration between Ovalhouse, Inspire, Observatório de Favelas in Rio, Royal Holloway, University of London and the Federal University Rio de Janeiro, young people learned how to direct their own short digital films. They were invited to express their views on food and food justice, and think about the future of food. The resulting short films are creative, thoughtful and often humorous.
The films made by London filmmakers were screened in London and Rio, and now the Brazilian young filmmakers are visiting London to show their films. Join us for the screening & Q&A with the young filmmakers from Rio.
Ovalhouse Theatre, 7pm on Friday Oct 14
Afterwards Q&A with film-makers, drinks & nibbles

London Film Screening: Food Futures 2.0
On the 25th October 2015 we booked out the entire Upstairs Theatre at Ovalhouse Theatre London for a big screening event where we showed key films from our participatory video workshop to an audience of members of the public, representatives of London arts organisations, local food activists, university students, and the young film-makers themselves.
The team from the ICT4D Centre, Ovalhouse and InSpire explained the process of participatory video and the young film-makers commented on their experience and on the films. There was a lively discussion with the audience.
Finally we screened the winning films from the film competition and awarded prizes to the aspiring young film-makers. Some of the winners had not ever worked with film before and were introduced to medium during the participatory workshop we ran.
The winning films were:
1st Prize: “Food Waste and Food Justice” by Jasmine Adolphus-Edie, Anastasia Wambui, Kawthar Talbi, Tyrell Williams and Camila Robinson-Rodriguez
A documentary film reflecting on the amount of food wasted daily in the UK, interviewing diverse people in South London, and suggesting solutions what can be done about this issue.
The 1st Prize was for the young film-makers to take a 1-week trip to Rio in 2016 to meet young film-makers there and to screen and discuss their film at community arts hub Observatório de Favelas.
2nd Prize and top in the Technical Category: “One day, one month one year”, by Alexis Ossio Cajias, Freddie Ngalelafu and friends
A narrative film reflecting on body image, peer pressure and experimental new diets.
The 2nd Prize was £150 in food shopping vouchers sponsored by The Co-operative Food Store on Camberwell New Road, Kennington and five gift vouchers for cinema film club visits.
We then had a party together and enjoyed a joint celebratory meal with healthy and delicious Turkish food catered by the women’s community restaurant/catering social enterprise Mazimas. Theirs is another fantastic story – read about them here: http://www.mazimas.co.uk/our-story/.
